New Tests: MPEG4 Part 2 Simple Profile (Fall 06)-Non-scientific!

Source Material from 3 chip camera, DV format
Encoded on Mac G5 Dual 2GHz PowerPC, 1 GM RAM, using Cleaner 6.5.1.177, OSX 10.4.8., QuickTime Pro 7.1.3

Same pre-processing on all clips. Video encoded to 340 kbps, 15 fps, keyframe every 150 frames with automatic keyframes, one-pass VBR when possible. (Normally I put in a key frame every 5-6 seconds, but messed up on the first movie, so I kept the same settings for the rest)
Audio compressed to AAC, 40 kbps, mono, 32KHz.

The best way to compare codecs, after playing a clip, is to stop the movies at the same location when compression is difficult: lots of motion, color, a dissolve, etc. This is when compression artifacts are most noticeable.

Notes
3ivx (V 4.5.1)
encoding time: 4 min 16 sec
Sorenson Video 3 Pro (v 3.3)
encoding time: 5 min 38 sec
Apple MPEG4 (Spatial Q 50)
encoding time: 4 min 16 sec
Apple MPEG4 (Spatial Q 100)
encoding time: ?
Apple MPEG4 Improved
encoding time: 4 min 23 sec

ORIGINAL DV FILE: To download on Mac, Control-click and select "Download Linked File".
On PC, right click and select "Save Target As". HERE (this is a 33 sec clip, 120 MB)

Preprocessing used:
Image: Slight crop, Image size 352x264, Deinterlace Eliminate Top Field Adaptive, Sharpen 1.5/25
Adjust: Gamma +24, Brightness +24, Saturation -4
Encode: 15 fps, Video Rate Basic, Limit to 340 kbits/sec.

Options for 3ivx-Default for Single Pass-Average Bitrate, but set Minimum Quality to 18 (probably why the data rate is a bit higher than 340 kbps), and Force Keyframe after 150 delta frames). Usually I use the default, but keyframe every 5-6 sec.
Options for Sorenson: Bidirectional Prediction Allow, Automatic Key Frames 50, Sorenson One-Pass VBR, nothing else selected.
Options for MPEG-4 Improved: Keyframe Every 150 frames, Re-sync markers. You can't create a QT movie in Cleaner using MPEG-4 Improved. An mp4 file was created, and then saved as a mov.

Audio: Codec: MPEG-4, Sample rate 32 KHz, 16 bit, Mono, Bit Rate 40 kbps, Output sample rate 32 KHz., Encoder Quality Best
